Paradox

This modern styled wooden wall art uses almost a dozen different types of woods - both domestic and exotic. The original piece includes walnut, maple, cherry, pine, mahogany, bubinga, teak, jarrah, and Purple Heart among others.

This is a piece inspired by the strangeness and diversity of the human experience. Carl Rogers famously said, "The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change."

I know that certainly rings true for me.

In a polarized world, we love and embrace our monolithic dualities of right / wrong, good / bad, black / white.

Yet we and life itself are so much more complex in reality,

- A day mourning the anniversary of a family death is punctuated by birth of a friend's child.

- Soldiers laying down their arms against one another to spend Christmas Day playing soccer.

- The feeling of the deepest grief and deepest joys running so closely together

I don't intend for this piece to be explicitly proselytizing; I tell you only because you're reading. But I do think the diversity paradox of experiences in each of us are so much more universal than we would like to believe.

There are no stains or paints used, all the colors are different wood types finished only with boiled linseed oil and beeswax.

This piece was and continues to be healing for me. Among other things, it is the namesake for my studio.

Framed option includes approximately 1" walnut frame; if you'd like a different option or a different size, I can work with you to make that happen.

Piece will take approximately 3-4 weeks from ordering.
